Ephesians: Name and Breakdown Ideas

Ephesians won the vote for our next series. While research for the series has already begun, we’ll get to work this week on deciding the name and weekly breakdown.

There are two philosophies that we need to go over first:

  1. How to name a series
  2. How many weeks a series should be

Naming a Series

Names can be creative or clear. The best names are both. But if you must choose, always be clear.

For example, a creative series might be called “Next Level.”

But based on the name alone, we have no idea what the series is about. It might be creative, but it’s not clear.

A clear series name might be “The Book of Romans.”

Everyone immediately knows what the series is about. It may not be creative, but at least it is clear.

So when we choose names in Preaching Team, let’s evaluate them based on the diagram above.

Creative and clear names are best. Clear but not creative are second. Creative but not clear are the last option. And names that are neither creative nor clear aren’t an option.

Length of a Series

Some churches will only preach a 3-4 week series. Others will take a book like Ephesians and spend the better part of a year preaching each verse.

In order to make Preaching Team work for a diverse group of churches, we will try to keep the series that we produce between 3-6 weeks.

This is the average length of a series in most churches.

However, we are making each series customizable. So if you would like to take what we create and add to it (or take weeks away) that is okay.

Adapt what we create to work for your church. One-size-fits-all doesn’t exist in preaching.

Ephesiasn Name and Breakdown

With that being said, today we will open up a discussion about name ideas and how to divide the book of Ephesians for each week of the series.

As we did last week, we will take any ideas and feedback into consideration today and tomorrow, then compile everything for a vote on Thursday and Friday.

I’ll start us off with a few ideas:

BREAKDOWN IDEAS

Ephesians can essentially be broken into two parts: Ch.1-3 is about our calling and identity in Christ. Ch.4-6 is about how we should “walk” or conduct our lives.

NEW: 6 Weeks

  • Week 1 – New Life (Eph 1:1-23)
  • Week 2 – New Family (Eph 2:1-22)
  • Week 3 – New Mission (Eph 3:1-21)
  • Week 4 – New Rules (Eph 4:1-5:21)
  • Week 5 – New Relationships (Eph 5:22-6:9)
  • Week 6 – New Enemy (Eph 6:10-24)

THE WALK: 6 Weeks

  • Week 1 – Who are you? (Eph 1:1-2:10)
  • Week 2 – Who are we (the church)? (Eph 2:11-3:21)
  • Week 3 – Walking in Light (Eph 4:1-5:21)
  • Week 4 – Walking in Love (Eph 5:1-33)
  • Week 5 – Walking in Obedience (Eph 6:1-9)
  • Week 6 – Walking in Armor (Eph 6:10-24)

NAME IDEAS

Here are a few name ideas I have been kicking around.

  • New Life: The Book of Ephesians
  • Walk The Walk: Ephesians
  • Ephesians: Calling and Conduct
  • Who Are You? The Book of Ephesians
  • Ephesians: Walking in Light
  • Prepare for Battle: The Book of Ephesians

What do you think? Good? Bad? Share your ideas and any helpful feedback in the comments.

  1. I’m glad that Ephesians won the vote. It’s very timely and will help our congregation of Believers learn about who they are in Jesus Christ and encourage their spiritual growth.
I’m looking forward to this series.

      1. Wow, thanks for all of these! These are all great. I’m going to have to find a way to narrow all of these great ideas from everyone down for the vote. This is going to be a tough one. I really appreciate the contribution!

  2. This isn’t my strong suit, but what about “Walking in War” or “From new birth to new war”. Eh…I don’t know.

    1. Don’t be so hard on yourself, Tim. I like where you are going with this. I think there’s something to the Walking in War title. Thanks.

  3. Ephesians: Walking in New Life?
