Ideas for Title and Breakdown of Spiritual Disciplines Series
Spiritual Disciplines won the vote last week. Thanks for voting!
This week, we need to pick a Title and Breakdown for the series.
As you probably saw last month, this will set the tone for everything else we do in the series.
So, as usual, I will start us off with a few ideas, but please take a moment to think about it and contribute your ideas in the comments. We are better off with too many ideas than too few.
We’ll gather ideas today and tomorrow, then put them up for a vote on Thursday.
Don’t forget that there are two parts this week: (1) Title and (2) Breakdown.
Let’s begin.
Breakdown Ideas
I wrote an article before about 12 spiritual disciplines. Check it out here.
It might be good to pick some of the disciplines from this list to talk about.
Unfortunately, we won’t be able to spend 12 weeks going through each of these. So let’s pick 3-5 key disciplines that we would like to focus on each week for this series.
NOTE: In my suggestions, I’ll include “self-control” in place of chastity, because I think resisting multiple forms of temptation would be best to cover in a series like this (not only sexual sin).
My breakdown suggestions
Inward Disciplines
- Bible Study
- Prayer
- Self-Control
Outward Disciplines
- Fellowship
- Worship
- Service
- Disciple-making
- Generosity
Forgotten Disciplines
- Rest
- Fasting
- Confession
- Celebration
Let me know what you think, and share any other weekly breakdown ideas that you think might work well too.
Title Ideas
Remember, sermon names can be creative and clear. The best names are both. The second best are at least clear.
For example, Ephesians was a clear name. Walk the Walk was a creative name, but it’s unclear. Ephesians: Walk the Walk was both.
My Title Ideas
- Spiritual Disciplines
- Habits of Faith
- Spiritual Fitness
- Training for Godliness (from 1 Timothy 4:7-8)
- Forgotten Faith Habits (if we choose the forgotten breakdown)
- 3 Habits For Stronger Faith (or whatever number we end up with)
One of these might work, but we might be able to do better. What do you think?
Share your title ideas below.
Perhaps because I’ve just finished reading R. Kent Hughes’ “Disciplines of a Godly Man” – I am loving the “Training for Godliness” series title. I can imagine the branding of such a series would be easy, etc.
For me, I like the idea of a 3-discipline breakdown each week, so we would do a 4-week series in the end. However, this might be challenging to breakdown along the lines of “inward” “outward” and “forgotten” disciplines. I do like these three categories as an organizational element.
Thanks! Any idea how you might best break these down? You may be thinking something along the lines of Michael too.
Good morning Brandon. I like your topics. Perhaps we can focus upon your inward and outward disciplines and somehow combine some of them to meet your six week format.

Sure. Good idea. How would you propose the breakdown look? Let us know and I’ll add it to the vote
