Preaching Links 6.28.13
Pastors need to be humble. We should never stop learning. We should constantly work to hone and perfect our craft. Our great God deserves our greatest dedication and effort.
Because of this, I am always looking to learn what I can from others. I figure if something helps me or challenges my thinking, it will probably help others. So I like to share my favorite preaching articles every day on Facebook and Twitter.
But in case you missed them…
Here are my favorite preaching articles this week:
Characteristics of a Good Sermon Invitation
This illustration hit me hard: A young preacher complained to Spurgeon that he wasn’t seeing conversions. Spurgeon’s responded, “You don’t expect conversions every time you preach, do you?” The man replied, “Well, I suppose not.” Spurgeon declared, “That’s precisely why you are not having them.”
Restate Your Church Vision Every 30 Days
The Nehemiah Principle: It took only 52 days to complete the Jerusalem wall, but just 26 days in the people already lost sight of the vision. They were discouraged and unfocused. Nehemiah saw this and recast the vision to re-energize the people to finish the mission.
How Much Time Do Pastors Spend Preparing a Sermon?
An informal Twitter survey found that: 10% spend 6 hours or less per week, 15% 7-9 hours, 22% 10-12 hours, 24% 13-15 hours, 23% 16-18 hours, 2% 19-21 hours, and 4% spend 25 or more hours.
This last article raises a good question. You can always spend more time on a sermon, but how much time do you usually spend? And how much time do you wish you could spend?
Have an excellent weekend!
