Preaching Quote #10 – J.H. Jowett
I love this quote from The Preacher: His Life and Work by J.H. Jowett
“I have a conviction that no sermon is ready for preaching, not ready for writing out, until we can express its theme in a short, pregnant sentence as clear as a crystal. I find the getting of that sentence is the hardest, the most exacting, and the most fruitful labour in my study.”
One of the hardest things in writing a sermon is seeking inspiration from the Holy Spirit to find the singular focus of the text, and then articulating that focus in a “short, pregnant sentence as clear as a crystal.”
Whenever I uncover this sentence, the message nearly writes itself.
